Action Signs: The Semiotic Journey (SEMIOSIS 101 Video #3)

In today’s third Semiosis 101 episode on general Peircean semiotic theory for designers and illustrators, we will focus on Hall’s Semiotic Journey. In this episode we will explore how Peirce's sign-action (Semiosis) and Visual Communication Design (graphic design and illustration) creative process maps to it.

I personally came across Sean Hall’s book This Means This, This Means That when I was researching my doctorate. As I say in the Semiosis 101 videos, it took until my doctorate for me to begin to understand semiotic theory. At this point I hadn’t even realised there were two main forms of semiotic theory, and I hadn’t discovered Peirce yet.

When I read Hall’s Semiotic Journey I quickly came to realise how semiotics wasn’t just an exercise in post-publication analysis - semiotics was integral to effective visual communication from the moment designers and illustrators begin to answer a brief.
